Sitting in a little village dating from the 8th century (actually far longer than that, back to Roman times) and spotted this: The Aixam marque is dedicated to producing these tiny pensioner microcars. An original BMC mini or Smart car would absolutely dwarf it. They are reserved exclusively for very old people who can no longer qualify for a regular driver’s license due to their age, infirmity or blindness. (!) There are so many remote hamlets with zero retail establishments, and old people need to be able to get to a village to shop for food. So they are allowed to drive these tiny cars, which are basically one step up from mobility scooters. The speedo maxes out at 80kph but you will never see one going nearly that fast. Occasionally they can be found on main roads but normally they are found only on very quiet, narrow and abandoned country roads. Everybody just recognizes the situation and when they come across one, they tread lightly and follow behind slowly knowing they are only going to have to follow them for a few miles….
