Installing the inside rearview mirror

I have the front bow of the headliner installed, along with the sun visors and mounting plate for the rearview mirror, but I cannot figure out how to pop the mirror itself into the mounting plate. Doug Braun has offered that you need to whack it into place by hitting a piece of wood held against the mirror base with a hammer, but this makes me a little nervous so close the windshield. Is this the only way or can someone offer another suggestion? Thanks Mike Thomas I have the front bow of the headliner installed, along with the sun visors and mounting plate for the rearview mirror, but I cannot figure out how to pop the mirror itself into the mounting plate. Can you take the mounting plate back off, -then- whack it together and remount? Asa Jay MSgT, USAFR, Retired “Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.” Ronald Reagan

Dear Mike, I understand your concern and frustration. I was lucky the first time, years ago, I removed the interior rear view mirror. For some reason, it went back into place with only modest effort and about one minute. I removed it about a year ago and then proceeded to suffer for what seems like an hour of struggling and curses. However, I *knew* that it could and would go back. I don't think I resorted to a hammer, but the old phrase of "holding your tongue just right" has some pertinence. I seem to recall that I decided to apply a small judicious amount of Mobil 1 grease, which I think finally tipped things in my favor. If there is a trick to re-mounting, then I would be keen to hear it. Asa Jay, C’mon, man! The mounting plate is screwed to the car. If you remove it and attach the mirror to it, how then would you propose screwing it back to the car? 😜 Mike—the mirror just snaps in and out. It takes no little amout of force. I advocate constant pressure rather than percussion. Mike Sent from my iPad

Thanks Mike, Yea, I was thinking something different, my apologies. For irrational reasons my brain was putting both pieces together with the screws on the outside. Yes, first to admit I can do “the dumb” sometimes. 😁 I too had difficulty with the spring socket thing. In my case one of the ends was a bit tweaked making it even harder, but I did get it in. I put the end of the handle of my rubber mallet on the mirror and hit the top of the big end with the palm of my hand and it went in. Richard Austin, TX Sent from my iPhone
